Innovation and Custom Engineering at Clarks Mining Services
At Clarks Mining Services, we design and manufacture equipment from our base in Wollongong, NSW. We specialise in developing and modifying machines for custom applications, always embracing the challenge of thinking outside the box. Some of our special projects include Tuyere machines for the Port Kembla Blast Furnace, an air-powered excavator for mucking out an underground coal bin, and a dump truck designed for railway use.
We are also committed to ongoing research and development, continuously improving and innovating our products. One of our latest advancements includes a grapple attachment on an air-track system for lifting service pipes. Our dedication to specialized service and design ensures that we deliver tailored solutions to meet the unique needs of our customers.

01
Air Powered Jumbo H104
This Atlas Copco H104 has been modified for civil construction sites and tunnels without access to electric power. It features a diesel engine for independent tramming between locations, while a pneumatic motor powers the hydraulic drill and boom, ensuring flexibility in areas without an electrical supply. Equipped with a single BUT 4 boom and a Montabert HC20 rock drill, this hydraulic tunneling and mining rig is designed for drilling narrow tunnel cross-sections in both soft and hard rock, with the capability to drill in multiple directions, including roof, floor, sides, and forward.
02
Air-Powered Excavator
Clarks has converted multiple excavators from diesel to air power for safer underground operations. The first modification was a Case 3T excavator, adapted for underground bin excavation by removing all electrics and diesel components and installing an air safety circuit. This pneumatic conversion allowed the machine to operate in underground coal mines without the risks of toxic fumes or explosions. Clarks has also modified a 1.3T JCB excavator and a Kubota U17-3 for similar applications.

03
Dump Truck
Clarks Mining Services has engineered a diesel-powered dump truck specifically for railway applications. A key feature of this custom-built machine is its specially imported balloon tires, designed to allow safe and efficient travel on rail tracks without causing damage to either the tracks or the tires. This innovation enhances mobility and durability, making the dump truck ideal for rail maintenance and construction projects. As part of Clarks Mining’s commitment to specialized engineering solutions, this project demonstrates our ability to modify and adapt heavy machinery to meet the unique demands of challenging environments.
04
Pneumatic Underground Transport Machines
At Clarks Mining Services, we have designed and manufactured several pneumatic transport machines specifically for carrying heavy materials in underground environments. These machines are built to transport items such as conveyor structures, grout pallets, and longwall components, providing a safe and efficient solution for underground coal mining operations. Their pneumatic design eliminates the risks associated with diesel-powered equipment, making them ideal for coal mines. Additionally, they offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional Load Haul Dump (LHD) machines, helping to reduce operational costs without compromising performance. This project reflects our commitment to delivering innovative and practical solutions for the mining industry.

05
Tuyere Machine – Engineered for Port Kembla Steel Works
Our Tuyere machines are specifically designed for use at the Port Kembla Steel Works, providing an efficient solution for installing and removing Tuyeres from the blast furnace. Powered by LPG, this machine offers reliable performance in high-temperature industrial environments.
Its undercarriage design is based on our Clarks air-powered drill rig but features a shorter wheelbase for enhanced maneuverability. To ensure smooth operation and protect surfaces, we have fitted it with polyurethane-coated track pads. This specialized design reflects our commitment to engineering practical and durable solutions for heavy industrial applications.
06
Grapple Attachment
A Clarks Mining Innovation
We designed and tested a versatile grapple attachment that can be fitted to the boom of a drill rig. This innovative attachment allows for the efficient handling of objects such as service pipes, enabling them to be picked up from the ground and lifted into position with ease. The grapple’s design enhances the functionality of the drill rig, making it a valuable tool for various applications where precision handling is required. This project highlights our commitment to improving operational efficiency through tailored, practical engineering solutions.
